TYSONS CORNER

The Dulles Metrorail and Interstate 495 HOT Lanes projects are moving full steam ahead, and the traveling public in Virginia will reap the rewards of these significant transportation additions by 2013.

Hot Lanes are a system that will provide new travel choices for a faster and more reliable trip.

Work on five new Metrorail stations is underway, with four in Tysons Corner and one in Reston. Trains are expected to begin servicing these stations in late 2013.

Both of these projects will increase transportation options in Northern Virginia. In the mean time, there are numerous delays. To ease these impacts, Virginia Megaprojects created a traffic management plan (TMP) to offer alternatives to lane closures and detours.

This plan includes three new bus services: Tysons Connector, a free shuttle serving Tysons Corner at lunchtime during the week; Tysons Express, a Woodbridge to Tysons Corner commuter bus with free Wi-Fi; and a Loudoun County express bus to Tysons Corner to launch in fall 2010.

Daytime Lane Closures on I-66

The left lanes in
both directions of I-66 will be closed between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Monday, June 28, through Thursday, July 1, and 9:30 a.m. and noon on
Friday, July 2. These closures are necessary for pier construction and
safe delivery of materials for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project.

The eastbound
left lane will also close overnights Monday through Thursday, from 9:30
p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Police will be onsite for motorist safety for the
nighttime work.

Overnight Ramp Closure of the Eastbound Dulles Connector Road (Route
267) to Northbound Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123)

The exit ramp
from the eastbound Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) to northbound
Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123) will close again overnights all
next week starting Monday, June 28, for crane moves.

Traffic on the eastbound Connector Road will be directed to use the exit
to southbound Route 123 instead, and then turn left at the bottom of the
ramp to access the northbound lanes.

Well Tysons Corner – Are You Ready for a Traffic Nightmare This Weekend?

Route 123 will be closed at the Beltway from 9:30pm tonight (Friday) until 5:00 am Monday. All traffic in and out of Tysons Corner will be detoured. The old Beltway bridge is being demolished and traffic is moved to a new bridge over Route 124.

When you leave the shopping areas, you will have to take Route 7. If you’re coming from McLean, you will be directed to Route 193 (Georgetown Pike). Expect serious delays!

The following ramps will be closed:

I495 north to Route 123 south
I495 south to Route 123 north
Route 123 south to I495 south
Route 123 north to I495 north

The following ramps will be open:

Route 123 north to I495 south
Route 123 south to I495 north
I495 south to Route 123 south
I495 north to Route 123 north

If that isn’t enough, crews will be working on the Dulles Metrorail guideway piers over the Beltway, and the Orange Line between East Falls Church and West Falls Church will be closed this weekend. The stations will be closed Saturday, June 12 at 7am and reopen on Monday June 14 at 5am. Traffic will be moved between the stations by shuttle bus. If you plan to take the shuttle bus, allow an extra 30 minutes to your travel time.

Inbound traffic should plan to park at East Falls Church station and ride Metro from there. Parking is free on weekends.

Water main break causes Crazy Traffic all day yesterday in Tysons Corner.

All day long 123 was blocked off from International down to the beltway. A water main was punctured by construction workers. It caused dramatic changes in commuters traffic routes and times.

Say Bye Bye to the right lane on Route 123

Don’t worry, it’s not a huge stretch of road. But it is definately gone.

Do not be surprised if the you’re coming from McLean and as you get closer to the Capital One building and where route 123 meets the beltway, the traffic starts to slow. I know it often does this anyway, but it will be even more so now. The Dulles Metro project is in full swing, and in order to do what they need to do there will be some hiccups in our Tysons Corner (McLean + Vienna) Area traffic patterns.

The stretch that the lane is missing is basically on West bound route 123, starting at the intersection of Scott’s Crossing and Route 123 and going upto the 495 (Beltway) overpass. This construction coincides with the location of the Tysons East Metro stop. It will be the first of 4 Metro stops on the Dulles Metro line, also known as the Silver line.

Caisson Load Testing Planned Week of Jan. 4‐8, 2010

The week of January 4

th‐8th, field engineers from the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project will begin performing structural integrity tests on piers being built near Dolley Madison Road (Route 123) and the Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) interchange. The first of these tests is planned for Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at approximately 1:00 PM, weather permitting. This test will be performed on the right hand side of southbound Route 123 across the street from Anderson Road. It is between the Route 123 southbound ramp to eastbound Dulles Connector Road and the ramp for Dulles Connector Road eastbound to southbound Route 123.

This testing is a routine part of the construction program to collect data about the load capacity of caissons, which are the foundations that will support the aerial structures of the future Metrorail.

Some of this testing will sound like a knocking noise, and

a few short, loud blasts will occur. We want you to be aware in advance of this testing.

All work will be performed during daytime hours only (7 AM to 5 PM).

Additional testing along that stretch of Route 123 will continue through January, and installation of piers will continue through 2010.

Shop at Tysons Corner Mall or sit in Traffic?

Virginia Department of Transportation wants to inform Tysons Corner shoppers about real-time traffic

This has always been a choice for many. And for some it’s even a choice to sit in traffic to get to the mall. But now shoppers can be aware of real-time traffic reports through multple flat screen TVs in the mall. That way when you leave you don’t have to sit in traffic. Or at least if you do have to leave you can be aware of what you’re up against on the road.

An article by Sabri Ben-Achour on WAMU.org reports that this program, of informing shoppers about current traffic, will cost $100,000 annually to keep up.
