The Express Lanes are built through a public-private partnership between Chamber member Transurban-Fluor and the Virginia Department of Transportation. The Chamber encourages you to visit the new website and see the updates on the project.

The 495 Express Lanes will run down the middle of the Capital Beltway, and there will be several opportunities to enter the Lanes. If you’re already on the Beltway, you can enter just north of the Dulles Toll Road and just south of Braddock Road. There are also several entry and exit points to and from other highways and major side routes. The 495 Express Lanes are high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes that will operate on the I-495/Capital Beltway to provide you with faster and more predictable travel options on I-495. The 495 Express Lanes will be two new HOT lanes in each direction on theVirginia side of the Capital Beltway from the Springfield Interchange to just north of theDulles Toll Road (approximately 14 miles). The Express Lanes are on schedule to be completed in late 2012 and will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You will pay your toll on the Express Lanes with an E-ZPass® – there are no toll booths to slow you down. The electronic tolling equipment will charge your E-ZPass® account. The Express Lanes will have all-electronic tolling to keep you moving. Warning! There will be no toll booths or options to pay cash. Carpools can use the lanes without paying a toll. If you plan to carpool on the Express Lanes, you will need three people in the vehicle and a switchable E-ZPass® (available summer 2012). The switchable E-ZPass® is your way to tell the Express Lanes operator that you are carpooling and ensure you are not charged a toll. Buses, carpools (HOV-3+), motorcycles, and emergency vehicles can use the lanes without paying a toll. If you have fewer than three people in your car, you will pay a toll to use the lanes.

Tolls for the Express Lanes will be dynamic, meaning they will change periodically based on real-time traffic conditions to keep the lanes free flowing. It is not possible to predict exactly what the tolls will be at any given time. It is expected they will range from as low as 20 cents per mile during less busy times, to approximately $1 per mile in some sections of the Beltway during rush hour. The average trip cost is estimated to be between $5 and $6. The toll rate will be based upon the changing levels of traffic in the Express Lanes. Sensors alongside the road will monitor traffic levels and speed, and toll prices will adjust to maintain free flow in the lanes.

Tysons Corner progress continues

4-7-11, Capital One hosted at it’s McLean HQ location the annual “Keep Tysons Moving” event. There were representatives from the Dulles Metro Silver Line, the HOT Lanes, both private companies helping in the construction, and other groups offering solutions and ideas to ease the pain during the construction and beyond.

Fairfax County Sharon Bulova was one of the first to speak. Her message was of happiness in the progress. She mentioned facts such as the metro being approximately 33% of the way done, and the HOT lanes being about 65% done.

TYSONS CORNER

The Dulles Metrorail and Interstate 495 HOT Lanes projects are moving full steam ahead, and the traveling public in Virginia will reap the rewards of these significant transportation additions by 2013.

Hot Lanes are a system that will provide new travel choices for a faster and more reliable trip.

Work on five new Metrorail stations is underway, with four in Tysons Corner and one in Reston. Trains are expected to begin servicing these stations in late 2013.

Both of these projects will increase transportation options in Northern Virginia. In the mean time, there are numerous delays. To ease these impacts, Virginia Megaprojects created a traffic management plan (TMP) to offer alternatives to lane closures and detours.

This plan includes three new bus services: Tysons Connector, a free shuttle serving Tysons Corner at lunchtime during the week; Tysons Express, a Woodbridge to Tysons Corner commuter bus with free Wi-Fi; and a Loudoun County express bus to Tysons Corner to launch in fall 2010.

Daytime Lane Closures on I-66

The left lanes in
both directions of I-66 will be closed between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Monday, June 28, through Thursday, July 1, and 9:30 a.m. and noon on
Friday, July 2. These closures are necessary for pier construction and
safe delivery of materials for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project.

The eastbound
left lane will also close overnights Monday through Thursday, from 9:30
p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Police will be onsite for motorist safety for the
nighttime work.

Overnight Ramp Closure of the Eastbound Dulles Connector Road (Route
267) to Northbound Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123)

The exit ramp
from the eastbound Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) to northbound
Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123) will close again overnights all
next week starting Monday, June 28, for crane moves.

Traffic on the eastbound Connector Road will be directed to use the exit
to southbound Route 123 instead, and then turn left at the bottom of the
ramp to access the northbound lanes.
