Mother Nature Wreaks Havoc in Tysons Corner Area

First, Tysons Corner and the surrounding areas of McLean, Vienna and Alexandria suffered damage caused by the August 23, 2011 earthquake and 13 aftershocks.  Then in that same week, we were victims of Hurricane Irene.

The earthquake registered 5.9 and caused strong shaking but only moderate damage to buildings and cars. Fortunately, there were no deaths reported in Fairfax County from the earthquake.

One of the major problems caused by Irene was the extensive power outages caused by downed electrical lines.  This really created havoc since many traffic signals weren’t functioning.  Not only were many roads closed due to fallen trees, drivers also had to take extra precautions driving without traffic signals.  As if that wasn’t enough, the heavy rains also caused flooding. In view of the weather, the dedication of the Martin Luther King Memorial was postponed.

I hope all of you had the proper insurance coverage on your homes to pay for repairs to damages that were caused by the earthquake, hurricane, and flooding.

For most of us, our home is our most valued asset and we must take the proper measures to protect         this investment.

As a Realtor and longtime resident of the Tysons Corner area, it is my obligation to inform all of you about the importance of catastrophe insurance.

Your basic homeowner’s policy does not provide coverage for damages caused by any natural disaster, with the exception of tornado damage.

Here are some tips on purchasing catastrophe insurance:

  • Find out if you need catastrophe coverage by contacting the Virginia’s Bureau of Insurance.
  • Make sure you have proper coverage, preferably replacement coverage.
  • Check the insurance company’s rating.  Only choose a company that has at least an “A” rating.
  • Shop around for the best premiums and deductibles.

I am Jeff Wu and I can assist you with all of your real estate needs.  Whether you are relocating to this area, or if you already live here and are selling your house or purchasing your new dream home in Tysons CornerMcLean, Vienna, or Alexandria, please contact me at Agent Knows Homes.

Perfect Blend of Modern & Historic Homes & Sites Right Near Tyson’s Corner

Tyson Corner is one of the largest business districts in the nation and continues to grow.  There is so much new construction going on and much more planned for the future, yet historical homes and sites are also located in this diverse Virginia area.

One such historical home “Maple Shade,” located in Vienna recently went up for sale.  It is a charming farm house that sits on almost 16,000 acres.  The house was built circa 1890 and the current owner knows all about the homes history.  The home actually has an official historical marker. It’s not often that a historical home goes on the market.

Historical districts such as Vienna’s Windover Heights Historical District contain a mix of both new and historical homes.  Many of these homes were owned by some of Vienna’s most prominent citizens.

While other homes are a part of Vienna’s history because they are the actually site where historical events took place.

New home construction or exterior renovations to existing homes in Windover Heights Historical District is strictly monitored and must be approved by their review board.  It is the review board’s intent to ensure that the new and the old maintain the areas historic ambiance.

If you would to visit a historic home in Vienna, the Freeman House was Lydecker’s store during the civil war.  To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the civil war, Freeman House will host a civil war exhibit.  The exhibit will be open Wednesday through Sunday from noon until 4:00 p.m.

In keeping with the historic theme, nearby Alexandria is home to the Gadsby’s Tavern Museum.  This historic site has an inn, that is now the museum and a tavern.  The tavern was first opened circa 1785.  The tavern now offers diners a casual but elegant experience and has an extensive menu.  It is open for lunch and dinner and also has a Sunday brunch.

Sadly, both of the Gadsby’s Tavern Museum buildings were damaged, especially the chimneys, by the earthquake that rocked the east coast the afternoon of August 23. The museum will be closed through August 28 while the damage is being assessed.

For a Fun-Filled Family Day, Start with a Visit to the Reston Zoo

Summer is almost over, the kids are back in school, and the weather is cooling down.  This is the perfect time to plan a fun-filled family day, maybe even on Saturday. Start with a visit to the 30-acre Reston Zoo located in Vienna, not too far from Tysons Corner.

The zoo has walking paths where the animals roam and play.  There is an aviary that is home to a wide variety of birds and a reptile house.

If you don’t want to walk, take a ride on the Zoofari.  The Zoofari is a narrated, wagon ride that tours the zoo’s safari.  Not only will your children learn about the animals, they will have the opportunity to feed them.  When the Zoofari makes stops, the animals will come right up to the Zoofari and beg for both food and attention.

If you really want to interact with the animals, you must visit the petting barn.  There are pot-bellied pigs, sheep, llamas, goats, and rabbits.  Not only can you pet and feed the animals, you can actually bottle feed the baby lambs.  You will need to purchase the baby bottles and cups of feed in the gift shop.

If you don’t want to have a picnic at the zoo’s picnic area, continue your family fun day by having lunch at one of the kid friendly restaurants in the Vienna, Tyson Corner, and McLean areas.

Vocelli Pizza in Tyson Corner is on the Urban Spoon’s list of kid friendly Vienna restaurants and offers eight lunch specials from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you’re a large family you might want to opt for their pizza special.  If you purchase one pizza at the regular price all additional pizza’s you order are at a discounted price.

I can’t think of a better way to top off family day than by watching a movie.  The AMC Tysons Corner 16 in McLean has an Imax theater, Real D™ 3D feature presentations, and a variety of movies to choose from.

Enjoy your family day! I am Jeff Wu and I can assist you with all of your real estate needs.  Whether you are relocating to this family friendly area, or if you already live here and are selling your house or purchasing your new dream home in Tyson Corner, Vienna, or McLean, please contact me at Agent Knows Homes.

Martin Luther King Memorial Dedication Again Stirs DC

The Martin Luther King Memorial dedication is scheduled for August 28, 2011 in Washington, DC, just a few miles from Tysons Corner. On this same day 48 years ago, Dr. King gave one of the most famous speeches in American history: “I Have a Dream,” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The memorial site is one of the most prestigious locations on the National Mall grounds. It will be between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and adjacent to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial.

There will be a pre-dedication concert that will begin at 10:00 a.m. The dedication ceremony will start at 11:00 a.m. A final concert is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

For two days prior, you can hear Dr. King honored in song and enjoy civil rights-inspired cruises on the Potomac. There are also many other special events and exhibits that will be taking place to celebrate the opening of Dr. King’s Memorial.

For those of you that are planning to attend this historic event, you may want to come early and spend some time in Tysons Corner which is in the Washington DC Metropolitan District.

Tysons Corner has many fine hotels such as the Ritz-Carlton, which is adjacent to Tysons Galleria, an upscale mall that combines shopping with restaurants and entertaining.

The Hilton McLean Tysons Corner is another excellent hotel and you can walk to both Tysons Galleria and Tyson Corner Center…another upscale shopping and dining mall.

The Hilton is home to the Harth Restaurant. The Harth supports local farmers by offering a menu with local and seasonal ingredients as well as regional wines and beers.

No matter where you stay, the opening of Dr. King’s Memorial is truly a historic event, and those that attend will be a part of that history.

The Washington DC Metropolitan District is a wonderful place to live. We are encompassed in America’s history and located in one of the top business districts. Yet, we are surrounded by serene parks and beautiful neighborhoods.

I am Jeff Wu and I can assist you with all of your real estate needs in the Washington DC Metropolitan District. If you are planning on selling your house or purchasing a home in this wonderful district, please contact me at Agent Knows Homes.
